An 8-panel accordion fold book presents an excerpt from
Margaret Atwood's acclaimed novel, The Handmaid's Tale.
Objectives
To maintain even pacing throughout the book and accentuate key parts of the text in order to appeal to a range of readers.
To experiment with type as texture and play with letterforms while retaining legibility.
To match the tone of the excerpt – a sobering description of a dystopian society in which power and powerlessness are major themes.
Solution
Repeating letterforms and other elements adds consistency from panel to panel. The three typefaces employed complement one anther: Univers in its heavy weight has stature and strength;
Hoefler Text accents the page with overly articulated italicized lines; Univers in its condensed face forms interlocking "chains" that aim to intimidate rather than invite, mirroring the mood of the text.
